The sacred building of St. Peter and Paul in Kranenburg dates back to a former collegiate and pilgrimage church. The original pilgrimage church forms the present-day eastern section of the south aisle and thus differs from the rest of the building due to its different architectural elements. The three-aisled church building features a single-bay choir with a 5/8-end and polygonally closed side aisles. A sacristy adjoins the choir to the north.
The original building dates from 1308 to around 1330, which was replaced around 1400 by a somewhat larger church building. This was eventually incorporated into the three-aisled brick pseudo-basilica built by Gisbert Schairt between 1409 and 1447.
The building was extensively restored in the second half of the 19th century.
In 1944/45, the roofs and vaults were destroyed, after which the church was rebuilt by 1955.

The Kranenburg cruise pilgrimage celebrated its 700th anniversary in 2008. The shrine on the cross was found in 1308 and has since been continuously venerated by believers from near and far over the centuries.

Since 2003, where the tree from which the cross fell is said to have once stood, a basalt stele commemorates the legend, the so-called Holy Cross stick. If you look through a round hole in the stone, you will see the Kranenburg Church.

The cruise pilgrimage brought prosperity to the city of Kranenburg. In the first half of the 15th century, a large late-Gothic church was built, but the tower remained unfinished. It was only 450 years later that the tower received its current characteristic slate dome.
