    Renovation Prinsenmolen from September 2020 – 2021

The Prinsenmolen is a national monument and has owned the Schieland Water Board since 1936 and the Schieland and Krimpenerwaard Water Board since 2005 (merger).

dwellers and millers; leen and Nora van der Torre

We used to pump water from a to b using windmills. Today we do that with grinders. We still own three mills, including the Prinsenmolen. A number of mills still exist and some can still be used to pump water. This includes the Prinsenmolen in the Rotterdam district of Hillegersberg-Schiebroek.

The mill can still grind the water away, but this is almost never done. That's because the tall trees around the mill stand in the way.

The Prinsenmolen is a large octagonal ground sailer. The hood is covered with reed. The mill contains a steel paddle wheel with a diameter of 6.49 meters and a width of 46 cm. At the bottom of the mill there has been a house for some time. The mill therefore has a residential function and is capable of grinding.

The mill rotates several times a year and can be viewed during the annual National Mill and Pumping Day

Both the Province of South Holland and the Water Board of Schieland and Krimpenerwaard are contributing to the restoration of the Prinsenmolen. Two project leaders from the Water Board are involved in this project: Maurice Swillens and Monique van 't Hart

After the restoration, the Prinsenmolen can continue for years to come, both technically and aesthetically. The living comfort for the miller couple is also improved by applying insulation

    – The reed cap is replaced by? Sustainable and according to the monument law

    - Isolate

    – Painting and new shutters

    These parts are being restored:

repair of the masonry and jointing

    restoration of concrete work

    restoring the watercourses

repair and partial replacement of frames, windows and doors

carrying out a thorough conservation and painting

repairing the thatched roof on the roof, including its insulation

replacing the thatched roof on the back, including its insulation

    repairing the lightning protection system

the checking and repair of the movement and the crosses

We naturally do this in a sustainable and safe manner and in accordance with the Monuments Act.
