The 1,155 hectare nature reserve “Stapeler Moor and the surrounding area” was designated on September 1, 2016 and contains the previously independent nature reserves “Herrenmoor”, “Lengener Meer”, “Spolsener Moor” and “Stapeler Moor”.

The protected area is part of the formerly large raised moor landscape of the East Frisian Central Moors.
