When the basalt peaks Spitzer and Breiter Steinkueppel were still standing, basalt mining began in 1908. In 1932 the canteen building with payroll office and dormitories for workers was built. After mining stopped in 1970, the district had the former canteen converted and modernized into the Berghaus Rhön. Since 1974, this has become increasingly important for tourism.
