"Above the Ruhr sluice of Essen-Horst lies the Villa Vogelsang, which was erected around 1840 for Friedrich Ludwig Niemann (1806-1889), who rose from the tenant of the neighboring Horst to the financier of Alfred Krupp In 1870, the authorized officer Heinrich The villa was named after the third owner, the entrepreneur Wilhelm Vogelsang (1877-1939), who acquired the estate together with the neighboring Horster mill and a large forest estate in 1910. Vogelsang ran a farm below the villa (see location Horster mill) Carbide factory and put on the until 1962 promotional colliery Wohlverwahrt.
The design of the Villa Vogelsang took place in the then popular classicist style of the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel: While the front of a freestanding business wing (now hotel) has a north-facing façade with a triangular pediment and a sprawling loggia upstairs, the river side becomes two-thirds flanked by square-towered towers. A conservatory, originally made of cast iron, is placed on the façade. Around the house extends a large park
The central entrance from three French windows on the city side can be reached via a flight of stairs leading to a lobby with marble walls and a multicolored stone floor. Two marble pillars divide the passageway to the transverse corridor, at the end of which is probably the staircase renewed in the 19th century. On the Ruhr side are several stucco-decorated representative rooms. The elaborate and elegant interior design of the house was restored in the second half of the 1990s.
In 1947, the Vogelsang family sold the house to the German Red Cross, which ran a maternity home in the building. From 1962 to 1994 it belonged as a monastery to the diocese of Essen. Today it is again privately owned as an apartment, hotel and conference center. "Source: route-industriekultur.ruhr/themenrouten/20-unternehmervillen/villa-vogelsang.html

The villa was built between 1840 and 1850 in the style of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, who only two years earlier had been appointed chief state building director and was therefore regarded as the king's architect.
The construction was commissioned by Friedrich Ludwig Niemann, an Essen industrialist. In 1840 he bought the nearby Horst mill and had the property built as his new home.
Traditions claim that his family found a treasure in the former knight's castle Haus Horst. Where the family's wealth really came from remains a mystery. What is certain, however, is that Friedrich Ludwig Niemann helped another industrialist: Alfred Krupp received a loan from Niemann in 1856.
