The castle Scharzfels was considered by the steep rocks as impregnable and was not conquered in the 30 year war. Gorgeous resort with many informative billboards.

The former Scharzfeld Castle is located on a dolomite rock high above the town.
The castle was probably built in the early 12th century on the remains of an even older fortification. Some parts of the castle were carved directly out of the rock. Due to its exposed location, Scharzfels Castle was long considered impregnable. It survived such uncertain periods as the Peasants' War and the Thirty Years' War without damage. For a long time the castle was inhabited and a safe haven for people.
In 1627, Scharzfels Castle was expanded into a fortress. A short time later, a state prison was also set up in the castle. It reached the peak of its importance at this time.

When Scharzfels Castle was besieged by French troops during the Seven Years' War, the castle complex had already begun to decay. In 1761, after a long siege, Scharzfels Castle was captured by the overwhelmingly powerful French, set on fire and then the remaining remains were blown up. What remained was a ruin that was left to itself for many decades.
In the middle of the 19th century, renovation work was carried out on the Scharzfels castle ruins. In 1857, it was made accessible to visitors via a brick staircase to the ruins of the upper castle.
