The existence of a ferry connection has been documented since 1500. The ferry has been operated as a rolling ferry since 1905. From 1939 to 1946, traffic was suspended. Until 1972, there was a customs clearance office for ferry passengers in Ellikon. The ferry "Rüedifaar" (ZH 4200), which has been in operation since 1979, belongs to the municipality of Marthalen.
The crossing costs CHF 4.50
The ferry may be used by Swiss customs officers to travel armed from Ellikon across German territory to Rüdlingen in Switzerland on the right bank of the Rhine.[1] According to current international law, "only competent, strong men who are not addicted to alcohol and who have normal visual and auditory organs may be employed as ferrymen."[2]
