There is evidence of settlement at one site from at least the pre-Roman Iron Age until the 6th century. With the development of the Weser Marsh by the Stedingers, the first church was built here; according to a chronicle from 1618, it was built in 1057. Later, it was replaced by a single-nave Romanesque church made of sandstone from the Upper Weser. The masonry of this church is still preserved in the north wall and tower. The remaining material was reused later.
