    The church of Ameugny

The church Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption (Assumption of Mary) is a Romanesque parish church in the municipality of Ameugny in the Saône-et-Loire department in the Burgundy region (France), which was built in the 12th century. Notre-Dame d 'Ameugny has been included since 22 October 1913 in the list of monuments (Monument historique).

The church of Ameugny, dedicated to Our Lady of Mary, was first mentioned in a document in 1050. It consists of limestone blocks and looks very massive. The hall church with three yokes and a pointed barrel vault is reinforced on the outside by buttresses. The semicircular choir dates from the end of the 11th century.

In the 15th century major alterations were made and a tracery window was added and chapels added. The square bell tower has arched windows on all sides and is decorated with blind arcades.

During the renovation work in 1987, the 16th century murals discovered in 1981 were restored.

The patronage of this place of worship “Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption” refers to one of the many memorial or festival days in honor of Mary, Mother of God. This goes back to the festival of her physical assumption into heaven. The (Catholic) Church celebrates this festival annually on August 15th. In the Orthodox churches the feast is called the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.

In rural areas of Germany with a predominantly Catholic population, it used to be customary for bundles of herbs to be collected by the population on this special day and blessed in a festive service. This old custom has occasionally survived to this day.
