Mountain Biking Highlight
First opened in 1790, the Forth and Clyde Canal crosses central Scotland, originally providing access for boats going to sea from the Scottish Lowlands through the Firth of Forth. The canal's length totals 35 miles (56 km), with a basin at Port Dundas, Glasgow.
As sea ships grew in size, it was a victim of it's own success, while concurrently the rise of the railways opened up more trading connections. Although it was officially closed in the 1970's, it is now a popular linking route for leisure cyclists, commuters and walkers.
