The Schuivenhuisje was built because the spelled flows into the Nordhorn-Almelo Canal at this point. The ships crossing the canal were pushed to the other bank by the water pressure. Therefore, a "lock" was built, which stopped the spelled during shipping traffic. In order to protect all of this from frost, the long, narrow building was built over it. Wagtail and kingfisher made themselves comfortable in the building.

The Schuivenhuisje (Dutch: sliding house, also called Dinkelhuisje) is a weir in Denekamp in the Dutch province of Overijssel. The Schuivenhuisje is about 15 metres long and quite narrow at about 1.5 metres. It was built in 1887 and has the status of a national monument. The Schuivenhuisje was used to regulate the water for the Nordhorn-Almelo canal. When shipping on this canal was stopped in 1960, it lost its function. In 2005, it was fundamentally restored.
