The Fort aan den Ruigenhoekschendijk consists of a regular bastion square with a wet moat and a drawbridge. The water-bearing ditch is between 32 and 35 meters wide. The fort has a bomb-proof guard house, sheds, shelters and storage depots. The keeper's house was built in front of the bridge over the moat. Fort Ruigenhoek is located between the forts Gagel and Blauwkapel, slightly forward on the east side of Utrecht. Its advanced position is due to the introduction of rifled barrels in the artillery, which enabled greater range and precision. In contrast to many other Dutch forts, Ruigenhoekschedijk was not built on an existing earth bastion. It was created between 1868 and 1870. The crew had a total of six officers and 215 non-commissioned officers and men. Six long 12 cm cannons and six short 12 cm cannons were available as armament, as well as ten 9 cm cannons for the flanking and two Coehoorn mortars.(festungsbauten.de/NL/NHW_Ruigenhoeksedijk.htm)
