The city was founded in 1843 and is known for a major massacre during the Civil War in 1863 and numerous bank robberies during the lifetime of Jesse James and other well-known bandits in the 19th century

Baxter Springs Heritage Center and Museum

A replica of Fort Blair is on display here. Those who would like to delve further into the Civil War era can obtain information on a car tour from the Chamber of Commerce, where 16 historical points are driven to.

Route 66 Soda Fountain in Baxter Springs

Looks like a diner, but unfortunately it isn't. Pupils and students meet here to learn, research and do homework. Nevertheless, a look through the pane is always worthwhile, because the interior is simply wonderful, in the style of an old diner.

General Store / Eden's Grocery Store in Baxter Springs

Legend has it that Bonnie and Clyde robbed this shop twice in a single week in the 1930s.

In Baxter Springs there are still some sights from the history of Route 66: An old "DX" gas station, the "Philipps 66" gas station (today the tourist information), the "Cafe on the Route", closed, (in the Building formerly housed a bank robbed by Jesse James in 1876) and "Bill Murphey's Restaurant" (closed). There is also the "Bilke's Western Museum".
