Hassendorfer Wehr industrial monument
From the weir to the bottom slide
As early as the 18th century, overflowing meadows along the Wümme was regulated by official regulations in order to preserve nutrients and sufficient moisture.
However, the many narrow arms of the river tended to grow weeds quickly.
Sand from the upper reaches of the river was deposited here, so that by 1900 regulated agriculture was not possible in the lowland area.
Since the 1930s, the river system of the Wümme has therefore been greatly changed by a variety of different regulatory measures.
In the area of the community of Hellwege and Ahausen, four large main locks were built, as well as an inlet and outlet system of ditches for various reservoirs, with which an even water level was aimed for.
The overgrown Wümme became a water system.
In the meantime there has been a change of heart and renovation measures are correcting the development of water bodies of bygone times. Floors replace weirs.
While the dismantling of former weirs usually also means the removal of this evidence of historical water development, the municipality of Ahausen decided to preserve the Hassendorfer weir as an industrial monument as a reminder of the technical achievement.
