Itter Castle was a subcamp of Dachau concentration camp in World War II. Prominent prisoners were interned here.

Itter Castle is a magnificent 19th century building in Itter in the Brixental in North Tyrol. The battle for Itter Castle on May 5, 1945, in which soldiers of the US Army and the Wehrmacht fought against members of the Waffen SS, also gained historical fame.

The construction time of the castle is unknown. It was a border festival of the Regensburg monastery to monitor the entrance to the Brixental valley against the diocese of Salzburg and could have been built after 900 (the Brixental valley came to Regensburg in 902), or maybe only later. In 1380 Itter was sold to Salzburg by the Regensburg Cathedral Chapter; the first known documentary mention comes from 1241 (together with the village of Itter and Count Palatine Rapoto II of Ortenburg as lords of the castle).

In the 14th century, the Itter judge and maintenance were based at the castle, the castle and village were set up as a castle peace, which, in addition to providing the administrative headquarters with firewood and food, also meant laying roads and providing military contingents. Among the nurses - who changed frequently - were the Freundsberger.
In 1526, the castle was destroyed in the peasant uprisings by Pinzgau farmers, but was rebuilt in 1532.
