The “Ober-Mooser Teich” is located in the Hoher Vogelsberg and is one of the most important Hessian nature reserves for bird life. The pond area, which takes up over half of the area, has a wide, well-developed and natural riparian vegetation consisting of varied reed and sedge communities as well as adjoining tall herbaceous meadows and wet meadows. In this small-scale, heavily water-influenced habitat mosaic, special plants, some of which are highly endangered, thrive that have specifically adapted to these now rare wet biotopes, such as the marsh bloodeye and the broad-leaved orchid orchid. The insect communities at the “Ober-Mooser Teich” are also diverse. However, the area is of particular national protection value for numerous bird species, some of which are seriously threatened, which visit the pond as breeding and resting water. 43 species of birds could be observed breeding here. In addition, there are a large number of resting birds that recharge their batteries for their onward flight every year on their flight to their summer and winter quarters at the Ober-Mooser Teich.
