The place, below the hills of Fourvière and Croix Rousse, has been the subject of engineers' greatest fantasies. There are numerous drawings of grandiose projects aimed at uniting the two hills. The CAUE has published a book, a bridge between two hills retracing all the projects.
In 1910, a small bridge was built. This bridge was so insignificant that the Germans forgot about it in 1944.

Another version indicates that it was Joseph Laval who took advantage of the pouring rain that fell on September 2, 1944 to go and defuse the dynamite.

As it was intact, it was via this bridge that the first Free French division entered Lyon on September 3, 1944 to liberate the city. A plaque installed on the right bank reminds us of this.

It was destroyed due to fragility and replaced by this pedestrian bridge installed between the two banks in 1989. May 2004
