A large rune that has been decaying since the 16th century.

The tour requires good basic mountain bike skills. Narrow forest paths and slippery ground (partly)
Otherwise, good resting place at Teufelsfels

But there is still a little way to go to Teufelsfels.

Beautiful ruin, always worth a visit.
However, you can expect a lot of pedestrians

Ruins of a hilltop castle from the year 926. One of the largest medieval castle complexes in the Hunsrück that should not be missed. There are possibilities to camp.

The Schmidtburg is the absolute highlight in the Hahnenbach Valley. It is best to leave the bikes at the bridge and explore the castle ruins on foot. There are three decent bio-compost toilets here and you can also get water. The water tap is located a little northwest of the trekking camp (behind the toilet further along the wall) and is built into the wall.

The Schmidtburg is said to have been built in 926 by the three Franconian noblemen Franco, Hunpert and Norpolt to protect against Hungarian invasions; The first reliable documentary mention was only made in 1084 in connection with the new owner Emicho. His son, Emicho II, inherited the Schmidtburg and later gave himself the nickname Comes silvestris, wild count.

The castle is one of the ancestral castles of the Wildgraves. In 1258 and 1277 the property was divided and several lines were formed. Personal disputes between the counts of the Schmidtburg and Kyrburg lines led to the granting of Schmidtburg to the Elector and Archbishop Baldwin of Trier. After the Schmidtburg line died out, it moved into the castle as a settled fiefdom. Until 1342, the Wildgraves tried unsuccessfully to get the castle back under their control through various feuds. The Schmidtburg thus became the Electoral Trier state castle and the seat of an office.

In the 14th century there were a large number of knight families in the lower castle who lived in the castle as castle men. During the 15th and 16th centuries most of these dwellings were abandoned. Only the Schenk von Schmidtburg family remained in the lower castle and expanded the northwest corner into a largely independent complex.

While the lower castle fell increasingly into disrepair in the 16th century, the remaining fortifications were finally destroyed by the French during the War of the Palatinate Succession in 1688.

Only a residential building and a farm building remained for the bailiffs, who managed the Electorate of Trier from there until the end of the 18th century.

But Johannes Bückler, known as Schinderhannes, also used the castle ruins as accommodation while fleeing from Kirner and Mainz gendarmes.
