Excavations from the past and a broad outlook

between 1500 and 1250 BC people settled on the top plateau of the Hemmaberg. The settlement history continued into the Middle Ages.

Archaeological findings suggest that the excavated double church complex from the early 6th century represented an early Christian pilgrimage site. Finally, in the Middle Ages, a church dedicated to Saint Emma was built. This also gave the mountain its current name.

At least since Roman times there has been a Celtic sanctuary on the summit plateau. In late antiquity there was a hilltop settlement with an older church and two double churches built at the same time at the beginning of the 6th century. The settlement perished around 600. In the Middle Ages, a pilgrimage church was built on the summit, and Rosalia, the saint of the plague, has been worshiped in the Rosalia grotto since the Baroque period. The name refers to Hemma von Gurk. The finds from the archaeological excavations are on display in the Globasnitz Archaeological Pilgrim Museum.
