In the first centuries of the development of Rovinj, there was a small single-aisled church dedicated to St. George on the site of today's cathedral, and not far from it there were also the small churches of St. Ursula, St. Roch and St. Michael. In the middle of the 10th century, after the “miraculous landing” of the sarcophagus of St. Euphemia on the Rovinj coast, the new three-aisled church was built, which is also consecrated to her. The great economic development from the middle of the 17th century forced the need for a new and larger church, and so on December 8th, 1720, after several years of preparation and the demolition of the neighboring churches mentioned, the reconstruction of the church according to the plans of the Venetian began Architect Giovanni Scalfarotti (1700-1764). The later construction was entrusted to another architect, Giovanni Dozzi, who completed it at the end of 1736. The new cathedral was proclaimed "insignis" on September 11, 1747, while the festive church consecration took place on September 26, 1756. This new building is the most important example of Istrian baroque architecture on the coast, and with its imposing dimensions (51.11 m length; 30.26 m width; the height of the central nave is 17.71 m, and that of the aisles 10.11 m ) and the bell tower, which is modeled on the bell tower on St. Mark's Square in Venice, dominates the old town of Rovinj.
