This bridge is known by two names:
Seven-character bridge or Schoofs bridge. The "Seven Signs" in this context are the seven steel sculptures by Veronika Pögel, "Seven Signs on the Ruhr", on the north bank of the Ruhr at this point. And why "Schoof's Bridge"?
The previous bridge stood near Guts- and Gasthof Schoof until both were torn away when the Möhne dam wall was blown up on the night of May 17, 1943.
Until the bridge was rebuilt in 1955, people had to rely on a ferry, and the longtime and last ferryman on this ferry was Alfred Schoof.
