The origins of this impressive wayside cross are said to date back to the 17th century. Since then, it has been destroyed several times - including during the French Revolution - but has been rebuilt again and again. The crossing, i.e. the intersection of the longitudinal and transverse beams of the cross, is designed as a closed circle, and the transverse beam bears the inscription "Croix de Calvaire".

The name refers to Calvary, in memory of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Golgotha (this Aramaic word means - like the Latin word Calvaire - "place of skulls") near Jerusalem.

Magnificent view of Fontainebleau and the forest of the same name.

A first cross was built in 1697 and took the name of Calvary. Around 1731, this cross was replaced by three other crosses sheltered under a shelter. The place, particularly venerated by the inhabitants of Fontainebleau, became the goal of a very popular pilgrimage. In November 1793, when the revolutionary municipality decided to destroy all the crosses in the forest, a large number of opponents went to Calvary. The authorities were obliged to send the troops to protect the workers of the masonry contractor Bonchalopin, in charge of the demolition. Some time later, it was said that one of the workers who had helped to destroy the crosses of Calvary, a sans-culottes named Couthor, suddenly became blind. Some saw it as a divine punishment sanctioning a sacrilegious gesture. The unfortunate Couthor was reduced to begging. You could meet him on the Pavé de Chailly road, where he implored charity from travellers, repenting of his profane act.
