The challenging climb features constantly fluctuating gradients averaging 8%, with tough sections up to 18% and a brutal 23% finish in the last 200m. Mount Diablo is the second highest peak of the Bay Area (1173m / 3849ft). It offers a great view of the bay area and the San Joaquin Valley. San Francisco and even the Sierra Neavada are visible.
The climb with its countless corners offers a magnificent adventure. Magnificent but also hard, since the gradient is fluctuating permanently. It averages 8% with longer sections of 15%-18%. The steepest part are the last 200m with up to 23%. Just when you think that you have conquered the climb, it's hardest part punches in.
The descent is also challenging. Many tight corners, some potholes and harsh wind demand good bike handling.
The road to the top is open from 8am till sunset.
