In 1857, Schwerin got its castle garden, which court gardener Theodor Klett laid out during the palace renovation according to the plans of Peter Joseph Lenné, garden director in Sanssouci.

In keeping with the fashion of the time, the garden on the palace island was created in the style of an English landscape garden. Stairs and winding paths, flower beds,
on which old rose varieties and other flowering treasures exude fragrance, statues, the mighty grotto and the connection between garden and architecture, which constantly creates new views and perspectives - all of this makes it particularly attractive.
The complex is a treasure trove that invites you to take a trip into the 19th century.
The faithful restoration, completed in 2001, was made possible thanks to a historical commemorative publication from 1869.

The orangery of Schwerin Castle is something very special. Unlike other cold houses or winter gardens, it was not built as a separate building, but is connected to Schwerin Castle. This makes it a design element that unites the castle and the castle garden on three levels. A three-winged wing, whose cast iron construction is particularly interesting, is followed by a semicircle of columns that supports the promenade above the inner courtyard.
At the beginning of the 1990s, Schwerin almost lost this treasure.
In 1994, the orangery had to be closed due to an acute risk of collapse.
Demolition or renovation - fortunately this question was decided in the interests of the historical building. After the extensive, true-to-original renovation, the orangery is now one of the highlights of a visit to the castle. Even wedding couples can now say "I do" here. The stylish Orangery Café is also a great place to linger.

In the 16th century, what is now Schwerin Castle was converted from a fortress into a magnificent Renaissance palace. Several gardens were created, which were expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the 19th century, the park was redesigned and expanded according to plans by the landscape architect Lenné. The location of Schwerin Castle on the castle island is what makes it so exceptionally attractive. The castle gardens were designed in the style of French baroque gardens. A double-armed cross canal forms the central axis of the green area and is therefore one of the most important design elements. There are 14 garden sculptures along the banks of the canal, with arcades created behind them.
