Lichtenroth castle stables on the Engelsfels

A six meter deep and over ten meter wide neck ditch draws attention to the Lichtenroth castle stables above Oberfreiung between Pielenhofen and Duggendorf. The steep walls of the Engelfelsen secure the area, which is around 40 meters long and up to eight meters wide, on three sides; From the top of the rock you can enjoy a wonderful view over the Naab valley.

There was a gate where the access path passed through a wall. The highest part of the former castle complex is formed by a narrow ridge above the neck ditch, on which the remains of a residential building can be seen. At around 12 to 15 meters, it corresponds to the usual size of a late Romanesque stone house. There are no longer any visible traces of the keep. It probably stood near the top of the rock and served as an observation tower. The time when the castle was built is unknown; It can be assumed that it dates back to the 11th or 12th century. We only found out about their existence after their downfall, when Mr. Jordan zu Murach, fiefdom of the Bishop of Regensburg and the Lords of Laaber, sold the “Burgstall zu Lichtenrode” to the nuns of Pielenhofen in 1297. The name, also known as “Lichtnroth”, indicates a clearing operation by the Regensburg Monastery.
