The Church of Naantali was once built as a monastery church of the on the peninsula Ailostenniemi Catholic Birgittenklosters. The only building remaining from the monastery is the largest medieval church in Finland after the Turku Cathedral.

The building permit of the monastery was signed on August 23, 1443 by the Swedish king Christoph III, who was nicknamed Kristoffer av Bayern and was born Christoph von Pfalz-Neumarkt. This date is also considered the founding date of the city of Naantali. The monastery buildings were inaugurated in 1462 and the monastery was named Vallis Gratiae, Gnadental.

The church of Naantali is a well-known attraction, but also serves as a normal parish church and in summer as a way church.
