The spoils of war are ringing in the tower

They can be heard every day: the bells of St. Nikolai Church in Apen. One of the two heavy orchestras has a special story: it was spoiled during the Thirty Years' War.

Apen “Our parish has already been visited by a group from the East Frisian Rysum, but they have not made any claims to our church bell. In any case, the deed has long since become statute-barred ”, laughs Apens Pastor Peter Kunst.
The Lutheran parish of Apen has a special relationship with Rysum near Emden: the larger of the two orchestras from the Aper bell tower comes from East Frisia and is spoils of war. During the Thirty Years' War (1618 to 1648) soldiers of Count von Mansfeld brought the valuable bronze bell, which had been cast in 1621, to the Ammerland. “At first the bell was buried in the sand because it had become too heavy for the fleeing troops.

Beautiful tower right on the street. If you like something like that you should make a detour there

The tower belongs to the St. Nicholas Church in Apen.
Old church from the 13th century with an atypical design, nave separated from the tower.
The St. Nicholas Church in the municipality of Apen was built in 1239. The church is an early Gothic brick church that stands on the old cemetery in Apen. The church building was extensively renovated between 1990 and 1995. The bell tower stands separately next to the church. There are two bells in the bell tower of the St. Nicholas Church. An older, smaller bell dates from around the 1350s and is one of the oldest bells in northwest Germany. This bell is also called the Catherine Bell because it bears the image of Saint Catherine. The larger bell was cast in 1621 and was brought to Apen by soldiers during the Thirty Years' War. The church tower of the St. Nicholas Church was built in 1497.
