Less than 100 miles from the coast of Morocco, walks in Lanzarote can be enjoyed throughout the year. One of Spain’s Canary Islands, you’ll find hiking trails criss-crossing from coast to volcano and back to coast, all in a single day. Rocky, with low mountains and desertlike terrain, there’s little to block your view of the Atlantic Ocean wherever you’re walking.
Formed through volcanic eruption, you’ll pass by numerous small calderas on any of Lanzarote’s hikes and crunch over lava millions of years old. Peer into the bowl of Caldera Blanca in Los Volcanes Natural Park or head to the north and hike to Mirador del Rio with its jaw-dropping views of tiny, neighbouring Graciosa.
With flat routes as well as rocky ascents, you’ll always find a hike to suit. When hunger strikes, villages throughout Lanzarote provide outstanding lunches, especially if you opt for local Canarian potatoes and mojo sauce.
