Exploring the Chiltern Hills
The Chilterns stretch across a large region and contain a labyrinth of trails that make them perfect for multi-day treks as well as day hikes. Walks from Tring can take you up into the hills without any dilly-dallying, as you can simply walk right from the historic town centre.
Tring sits on an old Roman road that cuts a gap through the Chilterns to London. The Grand Union Canal also uses this gap, making it a striking valley. Hikes from Tring include the spectacular ridge trails at Ivinghoe Beacon.
From the town, walk up into the hills to the beautiful Ashridge Estate. The woodlands here are majestic throughout the year and the grounds are vast. With 5,000 acres (2,023 ha) of land, you’ll find many wonderful trails. Continue on to the Beacon, one of the highest hills in the Chilterns, for outstanding views at 764 feet (233 m).
Many of the best hiking trails from Tring lie to the south where the bulk of the Chiltern Hills lie. Explore Tring Park or load up your backpack for a multi-day expedition. The trails here draw you ever onwards so you can keep walking as long as you wish.
River trails around Tring
There’s something about waterways that lulls you into utter peace when hiking and in Tring you’re spoilt for choice. The Grand Union Canal idles alongside the town and you can follow it in either direction.
Walking alongside the canal east will take you past snoozing narrowboats and vibrant hedgerows to Berkhamsted. From here you can cut up into the hills or continue along the towpaths for hours. Eventually, the canal will lead you into the massive Colne Valley Regional Park.
The Grand Union Canal divides at Tring and you can follow it north up its main route or branch west towards Aylesbury. You’ll find plenty of trails leading off from the canals, across farmland, through villages and alongside rivers and streams. From circular routes to longer distance trails, you’ve got a huge amount of choice here.
