If you’re looking for a true adventure in a phenomenal landscape, then cycling in the Outer Hebrides will quench your thirst. This remote archipelago lies to the north west of mainland Scotland and is made up of over 60 islands, 15 of which are inhabited. With ferries and bridges connecting them, you can ride a considerable distance throughout the island chain, exploring white sand beaches, quiet lanes and enjoying staggering views to the peaks of the Highlands on the eastern horizon.
The islands, particularly the largest, are hilly and, in places, mountainous but many of the roads wind between the hills. You’re never more than a stone’s throw from the sea and as a result, the views are always fantastic. The islands feature knock and lochan landscapes and often water seems more dominant than the land.
Wild camping is legal on these islands and there are few things greater than laying down your bike and setting up a lochside tent.
