One of the great settlements of the North East, walks around Middlesbrough reveal a proud industrial town just a short hop from the wonderful North York Moors National Park. From strolls along the historic River Tees, with its impressive engineering infrastructure, to ascents of one of Yorkshire’s most iconic summits, there’s plenty of adventuring to be had.
The quintessential walks in the town explore the Tees and its many iconic bridges, such as the Millennium Footbridge and the Tees Transporter Bridge. It’s not all architecture and industrial clout though, wildlife lovers can seek out the river’s nature reserves. For a coastal adventure, a beach stroll between Saltburn and Redcar is invigorating.
Venture towards the North York Moors and you’ll discover the sharp, distinctive profile of Roseberry Topping, the setting for arguably the finest hikes around Middlesbrough. Known as ‘the Yorkshire Matterhorn’, it’s an obvious objective and has delighted hikers for generations. The countryside around Roseberry Topping is incredibly scenic, with plenty of woodland trails and moorland summits to explore.
