Cycling through Castle Combe has got to be one of the greatest pleasures of English riding, particularly if you’ve caught the village on a quiet day. So quaint it looks like a film set and so beautiful you’ll start thinking about relocating, when you pedal over the early 19th-century bridge, you’ll feel like you’ve ridden into a Jane Austen novel.
There are plenty of wonderful cycle routes around Castle Combe that the hardest part is deciding which direction to ride in. A network of quiet country lanes leads you through the Cotswold Hills where you can enjoy sweeping views and whizz through historic villages tucked into the folds of the hills. The topography is never flat and there are enough ascents on every ride to justify that extra slice of cake. The roads are rarely too steep though, and as soon as you get tired of going up, it tops out and you start freewheeling down.
