Exploring the local hills
The nearby hills are firm local favourites and contain some of the best hiking trails around Chipping Campden. The town marks the start (or end) of the Cotswold Way, a 102 mile (164 km) long traverse of the region ending in the spa city of Bath. The route explores the best of the Cotswolds – its picturesque villages, historic sites and, of course, the verdant rolling hills that are synonymous with the region.
The first hill on the route out of Chipping Campden is Dover’s Hill. This natural amphitheatre gives showstopping views across to the Vale of Evesham in the east. Its terraced sides bear the hallmarks of an ancient Roman vineyard, whilst in Spring a carpet of bluebells interspersed with purple orchids create a riot of colour.
Towers, castles and manor houses
A great walk often has a tangible objective in mind, be this a summit, a pub or a historic landmark. Walks around Chipping Campden are no different. Nearby manor houses are well worth exploring, with their extravagant gardens, terraces and ponds. Expect to see some stunning architecture, built from the golden limestone that lovers of the Cotswolds cherish so much.
A local highlight is the spectacular Broadway Tower, situated on the summit of Beacon Hill, the highest in the vicinity at 1,023 feet (312 m). This Norman-style battlemented folly is an iconic landmark of the Cotswolds and well worth an adventure. One clear days sixteen counties can be seen from the tower’s ramparts. And of course, there are plenty of quality cafes, pubs and restaurants in the nearby towns and villages for that post-walk refuel.
An array of wildlife
Hikes around Chipping Campden immerse you in nature, with a rich variety of wildlife. Earthy scents and fresh air await in the nearby woodlands of chestnut and larch. Watch as squirrels scuttle around the undergrowth and climb the tree trunks.
