The oldest protected area in Tyrol and the largest nature park in Austria begins on the west bank of the Achensee – the Karwendel. Here, a mountain chain with a unique landscape, cozy mountain huts and picture-perfect panoramas ticks all the boxes for a wonderful alpine hike. In this Collection, we present the three-day Karwendel circuit which guide you through the region’s varied sides.

On your round through the Karwendel, you hike through romantic alpine meadows, climb rugged peaks and spend cozy evenings in mountain huts. In addition to its picturesque forests, rustic rivers and impressive limestone Alps, the Karwendel is also home to an array of wildlife and plants. You have a good chance of spotting a golden eagle sailing through the air here, as the Karwendel has the most dense golden eagle population in the Alps.

The Karwendel circuit is not an easy hike – you should be experienced in alpine terrain, surefooted and in a good physical condition. The round starts in Pertisau am Achensee. From here, you can either take the cable car up to the Zwölferkopf or you can power up the first 1,650 feet (500 meters) in altitude on foot. The loop officially starts at the mountain station at the top of gondola.

If you don’t have three days, you can shorten the route to two days. On the second stage, we show you an option to bring you back to Pertisau, complete with magnificent views from the Sonnjoch.

No matter which variant you choose, reserve your accommodations in advance so that you are guaranteed a place to sleep. Don’t forget to pack sun protection, a rain jacket and some snacks, so you are well equipped for your mountain adventure.

Ready to go? You can look forward to the unique Karwendel region, peppered with views over the Achensee and the surrounding mountains – the perfect alpine short vacation.
