La Gomera, the circular island, is a hiker's paradise in the Canary Islands. With its many gorges and different vegetation zones, it’s never dull. The GR 132 long-distance hiking trail circles the island completely and, with daily altitude differences of over 1,000 metres (3,300 feet), is a proposition for the experienced hiker. A treasure trove of breathtaking views, quaint villages, the occasional wild swimming opportunities and silence often only drowned out by wind and surf make this trail unique, even among those found in the Canaries.

You’ll pass at least one settlement each day, but as the island is sparsely populated, you should plan your food carefully. Not all wells have water at all times, so always plan an emergency reserve. Even in winter, the sun can be very strong here. So, remember to wear sunscreen and don't hesitate to ask the locals for water in an emergency, they’ll be happy to help you out.

There’s a lack of accommodation at several of the stage end points. Where they do exist, it’s best to book your accommodation in advance. Wild camping is not officially allowed, but as long as you respect property rights and nature reserves, there’s nothing wrong with the occasional overnight stay in the open. Equip yourself with a sleeping mat, a light sleeping bag, a small stove and a tarp, in case of rain. Please refrain from using open fires, as forest fires are unfortunately a too regular occurrence in the Canary Islands. You can usually find shelter from the wind between stone walls or even in caves or abandoned buildings. And remember to take your rubbish with you and dispose of it in the nearest village.

The best way to get to La Gomera is by ferry from Tenerife. From Tenerife South Airport, you can reach the ferry port in Los Cristianos in 20 minutes by taxi and cross over to San Sebastián on La Gomera. There are two ferry companies: Las Armas is cheaper, while Fred Olsen is quicker, with its spectacular trimaran.

Enjoy your adventures on this, the most pristine of all the Canary Islands.
