In winter 1944, the German army launched its last major offensive in the west, taking the Allies by surprise in the dense Forests of the Ardennes. Bastogne, at the heart of this battle, saw the surrounded American troops resist before being liberated. Today, this territory is crossed by a route dotted with monuments, museums, cemeteries and villages marked by the combats. This trail connects the main historical sites.

The route follows a three-stage loop departing from Bastogne, easily accessible on foot or by MTB. It alternates between small rural roads, forest tracks and country paths. On each section, signs and monuments tell the story of the liberation. The entire route is waymarked and suitable for itinerant hiking.

The terrain is generally easy, with no major technical difficulties. It is advisable to provide good shoes and to be minimally enduring, each stage exceeding 20 kilometers.

In terms of accommodation, some lodges and guest rooms line the route, but services remain limited on certain sections. Remember to book your nights as early as possible and to plan snacks for the stages.

The ideal seasons range from spring to autumn. Winter, on the other hand, can make some passages muddy or difficult to navigate, although this is also the time when the memory of the winter of 1944 takes on a more tangible dimension.

Bastogne, the starting and ending point of the route, is well served by the road. The nearest station is Libramont, accessible by train from Namur or Liège. Then, a bus continues to Bastogne.
