The Rondane Triangle is one of Norway’s classic hikes. Unfolding within the country’s first national park, the trail winds through ancient valleys and across high plateaus framed by ten peaks over 6,500 feet (2,000 metres) creating a powerful sense of place.

The landscape transforms endlessly in shifting moods of light and weather — cloud, sun, and shadow redrawing the contours as if the mountains themselves were changing character with each passing hour.

Though glaciers have scattered many rocks across the terrain, the landscape is far from barren; alpine flora clings to life between the boulders, adding unexpected moments of colour. As you progress, the deepening silence invites a rare kind of immersion that only wilderness can offer.

It is a wilderness, yet never out of reach. While sturdy hiking boots are essential for the rocky terrain, the Rondane Triangle strikes an ideal balance: a true classic route, supported but not overdeveloped. The perfectly formed loop links three distinctive DNT cabins — Rondvassbu, Dørålseter, and Bjørnhollia. These offer everything from simple bunks to full-board meals, while those seeking solitude can opt for self-service cabins like Øvre Dørålseter.

Most hikers begin at Spranget, a seasonal drop-off point reachable by local bus, followed by a short walk or cycle to Rondvassbu. Others start from Bjørnhollia or Dørålseter and the route can easily be hiked in both directions. Access is good, but hikers should plan to avoid the wild reindeer calving season (1st May to 10th June), when some trails and DNT cabins are closed to protect this vulnerable population. Early-season hikers should prepare for challenging conditions as the landscape transitions from snow-covered to bare-ground. Set aside 4 to 5 days for an unhurried experience.

The Rondane Triangle both challenges and refreshes. It’s a route that lingers in memory — one that often calls you back.
