Lush forests and pristine lakes shape the remote, rugged terrain along the Canadian border. Add the solitude of deep wilderness and the unique experience of traversing an international boundary, and you have the essence of the Border Route Trail (BRT). This 65-mile point-to-point trail winds through the heart of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), offering a challenging trek for experienced backpackers seeking tranquility and adventure.

The Boundary Waters, shaped by glaciers and rich in Indigenous and voyageur history, is now a protected wilderness known for its vast waterways and boreal forests, and is a popular canoeing destination. However, the Border Route Trail, planned by the Minnesota Rovers Outing Club and built in the early 1970s, provides a unique opportunity to explore this incredible landscape on foot.

Unlike the water-based routes that define the Boundary Waters, the BRT offers a different perspective; it allows you to experience the rolling hills, dense forests, and countless lakes, all from the trail. While shorter than other long-distance trails, it is intense and remote, requiring careful logistical planning. The eastern terminus is near Grand Marais, and the western end is near Gunflint Lodge. Accessing these trailheads can be challenging due to winding backcountry roads and limited cell service, making pre-arranged self-shuttles the most reliable option. You can use two vehicles for a self-arranged shuttle because public transportation to these areas is extremely limited. Due to the remoteness of the trail, there are no resupply options, however, since the BRT is only 65 miles long, you can pack all your food and water filtration supplies for the entire trip.

The best times to hike the BRT are late spring (mid-May to mid-June) and early fall (September) when the conditions are ideal. Summer brings high humidity and insects, and in the winter, you'll risk hiking in snow and very cold temperatures. The trail itself presents moderate difficulty, with frequent hills but no major climbs or water crossings. However, navigation can be tricky due to overgrown sections and inconsistent markings, so taking a map and compass is essential. While GPS apps can be helpful, they should not be relied upon exclusively. Considering all these factors together, this is a trail that is best suited for experienced backpackers. You can find shuttle information, printable maps, and important things to know before heading out on the Border Route Trail on the official website here: borderroutetrail.org/hike-planning.

Camping along the BRT requires a permit for overnight stays within the Boundary Waters, which can be obtained online or in Grand Marais. Dispersed camping is allowed at least 150 feet from the trail and water sources, though designated campsites are available and often shared with canoeists. Water sources are abundant, but filtering or purifying is necessary due to potential contaminants. Completing trail registers is recommended for overnight backpackers to ensure safety and tracking. You can find BWCAW permit information here: bwca.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.boundary_waters_permits

The Boundary Waters is home to moose, black bears, wolves, and smaller mammals, making bear-proof food storage (such as hanging food or using bear canisters) highly recommended. Following Leave No Trace principles is essential to preserving the wilderness and minimizing human impact.

The Border Route Trail is a challenging and rewarding wilderness experience with a perfect mix of history, solitude, and rugged beauty. Whether you're drawn to its historical significance, remote landscapes, or the adventure of backpacking along an international boundary, hiking the BRT promises an unforgettable journey through one of Minnesota's most pristine wilderness areas.
