Unionsleden (Swedish for “The Union Trail”) is a 350-kilometer cycle route that connects Moss in Norway to Karlstad in Sweden, tracing not just scenic landscapes but a shared history. It follows the story of the 1814 union formed in Moss and peacefully dissolved in Karlstad in 1905, blending natural beauty with cultural depth.
The ride takes you through a changing mosaic of coastlines, farmlands, forests, lakes, and historic towns. One moment you're pedalling through a lively village or past a church, and the next you're gliding beside mirrored water or across forested hills. Elks, deer, and foxes may join your journey from the woods, while cafés, craft studios, and local farm shops offer inviting places to pause.
Each stage has its own rhythm: from the coastal calm of Jeløya to the quiet locks of Töcksfors; from Dalsland’s artistic heart to Värmland’s Viking echoes. Follow former railway lines, canal edges, and country roads as you explore landscapes shaped by nature and time.
Unionsleden is a slow adventure through two countries, tied together by shared heritage and a love of the outdoors. Along the way, you’ll find welcoming places to rest — whether it’s a lakeside inn, a manor house, or a forest campground — and countless reasons to stop, breathe, and take it all in.
You can easily reach both the starting point (Moss train station) and the ending point (Karlstad train station) using public transportation, making it ideal for a smooth, car-free adventure. And for extra flexibility, a dedicated bus service runs between Moss and Karlstad, perfect if you want to return to your starting point or shorten your journey. Bikes are allowed on the bus, making Unionsleden one of the most accessible long-distance cycling routes in the region.
Whether you ride it all or just a part, Unionsleden offers a journey that’s deeply human, beautifully wild, and unforgettable.
