Out of the city and onto the trails! Despite its size, Munich is perfect for trail runners. The English Garden is larger than New York’s Central Park, while riverside and floodplains along the Isar are crisscrossed by a wealth of footpaths and narrow trails.

None of this is new to me, as Munich was my home for many years. With an apartment right on the Isar floodplains, I used to regularly explore Munich's urban greenspaces in my running shoes. That was more than six years ago, though it was brilliant recently rediscovering Munich's trails as a visitor, testing the new Speedgoat 6 from HOKA on the trails of my old home.

I spent four days getting reacquainted with Munich’s trails and I present my favourite runs in this Collection. Some stay very close to the city – one of the great things about Munich is how the boundaries between hustle and trail blur very quickly. For others, you take the S-Bahn a few stops out of town and launch yourself in the natural beauty of Munich's greenspaces. Either way, all the routes are loops that can be easily reached by public transport. Use the route planner on the Munich Transport Association (MVV) website to plan your connections: mvv-muenchen.de/en/index.html.

What are you waiting for? Lace up your running shoes and off you go!

The English Garden is the connection between city and nature, it is the gateway from the hustle and bustle to the trails. At 375 hectares, Munich's green lung is larger than New York's Central Park. It stretches from the heart of the city along the west bank of the Isar to the northeast.

  2. I have to admit that I got a little sentimental when I was out and about in the Isar meadows in my running shoes again after years. The Isar meadows shaped my home when I still lived in Munich. The Flaucher was right on my doorstep and the Isar itself was part of my everyday life: I went out in the Isar

You can easily reach this trail run in the west of Munich by S-Bahn: From the main station, you take the S3 in less than 25 minutes until you get off again in Olching.
