There’s a seemingly endless array of hiking trails and routes. Some are flat, through fields or woodland; others are high up, involving a little more effort. A classic amongst all hiking trails (not only in the Thuringian Forest) is, of course, the Rennsteig: the oldest long-distance hiking trail in Germany. The Rennsteig crosses the low mountain range as a high-altitude trail and is an obvious draw. However, even away from this legendary route, there’s much to discover in terms of scenic beauty, history and culture.
MTB or gravel bike enthusiasts will also be happy in the Thuringian Forest. The trails are rarely steep, allowing for a relatively relaxed exploration of the area on endless gravel roads and bumpy forest paths that often provide great views. When tiredness sets in, the next rustic mountain lodge is never too far away, ready to serve regional specialties, regardless of whether you’ve spent the day in boots or on your bike.
