For the trail running world, France is proudly represented by the pursuit’s most famous event, UTMB, a 170-kilometre (105 mi) race around the Mont Blanc massif. The event, along with the rise of elite French trail runners such as François d'Haene and Mathieu Blanchard, is making the sport increasingly popular throughout the country. It’s no wonder, as France offers a trail running paradise, with a vast array of magnificent landscapes liberally spread across the nation. In this Collection, we'd like to introduce you to this splendour, with 12 adventurous routes that range from 20 to 40 kilometres (12 to 25 mi).

Naturally, we couldn't leave out the Alps, with two demanding loops – one in the Beaufortain and one in the Mercantour. The Pyrenees are also on the agenda, with a route in the Ossau valley and another closer to the coast, at La Rhune. Corsica, famous for its record attempts on the GR 20, is represented by a loop in Corte. The Vosges, Jura and Massif Central reveal a greener and less savage facet of the nation’s mountains. The Grands Causses and the Ardennes show that you don't have to be a mountain goat to enjoy your trail running. Finally, in the forest of Fontainebleau and in Finistère, you'll discover flatter terrain that’s just as wonderful to run through as France’s upland regions.

Each route begins from a train or bus station, making them easy to access by public transport. For more information, see the individual Tour descriptions.

Before each outing, remember to check the weather forecast and dress appropriately. These routes are demanding and call for a good level of trail running experience, both for when it comes to being out on the trail and for preparing your provisions and safety gear. It’s worth carrying a GPS watch or mobile phone to keep track of your location.

On adventurous routes like these, it’s vital to be properly equipped, and the new Traick hydration packs from deuter are ideal. Whether you need to quickly grab your phone or an energy gel, pull out your waterproof or fill your soft flasks, the Traick gives you lightning-fast access to all the essentials you need on the move. The secure fit conforms perfectly to the upper body, great for ambitious runners who challenge themselves over long distances and in wild places. Better still, the packs are bluesign® products and Green Button and ClimatePartner certified – so you can enjoy the freedom of running without a guilty conscience.

So, don your hydration pack and hit the trails.
