Venturing past magnificent castles, breathtaking reservoirs and countless viewpoints, the Saale Cycle Route winds its way through the Thuringian countryside. On its 200 kilometres (124 mi), you’ll experience the fragrant forests that stretch across the region, cycle through enchanting vineyards and have the opportunity to take frequent breaks right on the banks of the Saale.

The Saale Cycle Route combines historic architecture, delightful wine villages, spectacular viewpoints and beautiful natural sights to create a real cycling adventure.

Glorious buildings, such as Burgk Castle, with its Silbermann organ, and Heidecksburg Castle, await on the Thuringian section of the Saale Cycle Route. Places like the Ziegenrück Hydropower Museum and the Feengrotten (Fairy Grottoes) in Saalfeld are perfect for longer stops. You’ll be captivated by the Saale river, which winds its way through the countryside in wild and romantic loops, and we can also recommend a detour to Leuchtenburg Castle, which is only a short detour from Jena. Here, at the Steg der Wünsche (Bridge of Wishes), your heart's desires will come true, or so the story goes. You can marvel at the largest porcelain vase and the smallest teapot in the world and – quite unusually – visit a porcelain church.

The Thuringian section of the Saale Cycle Route is suitable for experienced cyclists, as there are some steep climbs and descents. Between Saalfeld and Camburg, however, the route is family-friendly with only minor climbs. The varied elevation profile ensures that the long-distance route is a wonderfully interesting journey through Thuringia.

The full route of the Saale Cycle Route covers 400 kilometres (250 mi) and takes cyclists from the Fichtelgebirge in Bavaria via Thuringia to the mouth of the Elbe near Barby in Saxony-Anhalt. If you’re interested in the complete route, you can find it here: komoot.com/collection/699.
