Imagine walking along a path that takes you back in time and reveals landscapes that were formed by glaciers thousands of years ago. Your path leads between the gentle shores of the Lombardy lakes and the peaks of the Prealps. You’ll be travelling in Insubria, a region where history and nature combine to form a mosaic, full of natural beauty and architectural works of art. You’ll walk along historic paths that were trodden centuries ago by the Insubres, a mysterious and proud people.

On the Tours in this Collection, you’ll cross the present-day province of Lecco, in northern Italy, which winds its way through the Larian Pre-Alps from Val d'Intelvi to Monte Resegone. Four exciting stages await you, which are physically challenging but offer breathtaking views of Lake Como and its hills. You’ll observe the Brianza (the hilly area around Lake Como) and the Alps from a unique perspective as you make your way through diverse and fascinating vegetation – from the Corni di Canzo forest to the majestic Monte Resegone, the symbol of the region.

If you’re coming from the eastern shore of Lake Como – here’s the previous section of CamminaForeste: komoot.com/collection/2520841 – the Collection starts for you in Alpe Comana. Otherwise, I recommend starting from Argegno or Faggeto Lario, which are easily accessible by Navigazione Laghi boats or bus (lines C20 and C30 respectively). The return from Morterone requires some planning: you could spend the night at the Trattoria dei Cacciatori and then continue to the Piani d'Erna. From there, you can decide whether to take the cable car down or continue on foot to Lecco.

To take on this adventure, you’ll need hiking boots and several layers of clothing based on the onion principle. Take a spacious rucksack with you to carry enough food and water for at least a few days. You’ll be trekking through water-rich areas with some freshwater sources, but in recent years climate change has led to long periods of drought. At the end of each day, you’ll reach accommodation, which is usually a refuge. The Italian mountain huts are normally open from June to September when nature is at its most beautiful.

With this Collection, you’ll complete the CamminaForeste route in Lombardy, which began more than 730 kilometres (454 mi) ago in the province of Mantua, and which led you to discover the forest heritage of this region. A journey that not only filled your eyes with wonder but also revealed the incredible wealth that makes up our forests and the importance of preserving their integrity, for us and for generations to come.

Happy CamminaForeste!
