Trail running is becoming increasingly popular – and for good reason. If you want to escape the daily grind, breathe fresh air and exercise at the same time, what could be better than trail running? In and around the Styrian capital of Graz, southern Austria, there are routes that are perfect for a run in the great outdoors. In this Collection, I present three varied routes that mainly run along forest paths. These are easy to moderately difficult trails of between 6 and 11 kilometres (4 - 7 mi). You’ll climb up to 370 metres (1,200 ft) in altitude.

St. Radegund to Stattegg: North of Graz, this Tour takes you below the Schöckl mountain. A challenging 370 metres (1,200 ft) of elevation has to be conquered before descending another 660 metres (2,160 ft).

Small Plabutsch loop: You set off from Eggenberg Palace and immediately tackle a steep climb until you reach the Plabutsch (Fürstenstand) mountain.

Through the Leechwald forest to Mariatrost: At less than 6.5 kilometres (4.3 mi), this route is relatively short and leads through the Leechwald forest.

For beginners, I recommend the trail run through the Leechwald (Tour 3). If you’re already experienced and want more of a challenge, then the run below the Schöckl (Tour 2) is worthwhile.

You can easily travel by public transport to the starting points of the routes and I provide details in the Tour descriptions. As you’ll mainly be running on loose ground, good trail running shoes are an advantage.

Adequate hydration is important on longer runs, especially on hot days. Even if there are some springs along the route, water isn’t always flowing so don't forget your water bottle.
