Crystal-clear rivers, lush green meadows, shaded mountain forests and rugged mountain massifs with snow-capped peaks – the Lech Cycle Route reveals an Alpine landscape that’s straight out of a picture book. Away from the crowds, you’ll experience the wild Lech river and the magnificent nature of this part of eastern Austria.

The Lech Cycle Route has been officially signposted from Steeg in Tyrol to the mouth of the Danube near Marxheim since 2022. In this Collection, I’ve described the section from Steeg to Reutte, the Tyrolean Lech Valley Cycle Route. It’s ideal for a relaxed two-day bike Tour. If you cycle it in the suggested direction, you'll have a continuous, gentle descent. The path, which is very easy to cycle on, is also largely asphalted and is therefore ideal for leisure cyclists and those with children.

The route presented here consistently follows the course of the Lech, which meanders wildly and untamed through the Lech Valley in Tyrol. But it's not just the fantastic nature that makes this cycle route so special and varied. Along the way, you’ll pass great villages with cosy places to stop for refreshments. You’ll also pass unusual bridges and be able to dip your feet in the water on one of the river's many gravel banks if you need to cool off.

I’ve divided the 53-kilometre (33 mi) route into two stages of roughly equal length. The first stage ends at the Hotel LechZeit, which is located directly on the cycle path. However, you can also stay overnight in Elmen, where further accommodation is just a stone's throw away. If you want to split up the route differently, you'll find countless accommodation options in the towns along the way so you have complete flexibility.

When it comes to travelling, I recommend taking the train to Reutte or parking your car nearby. During the summer months, a bus with space for bicycles runs several times a day from the railway station in Reutte to Steeg. You can find the timetables at lechtal.at/en/service/bus-timetables.html. This way, you can take the bus to the starting point in a relaxed manner and make your way back to Reutte without any time pressure.

I hope you have lots of fun on the Tyrolean Lech Cycle Path.
