A famous proverb from the Veneto region of north-eastern Italy goes: 'I ovi xé boni anca dopo Pasqua'. It translates as ‘eggs are good even after Easter’ and means that gifts are always welcome. Nestled in the Sugana Valley, amidst mountains, orchards, lakes and rivers, the Valsugana Cycle Path (Ciclabile della Valsugana) is a classic cycling route that’s never refused – just like the eggs.

This Collection takes you on a fascinating cycle path between the commune of Pergine Valsugana and the city of Bassano del Grappa through idyllic landscapes with breathtaking views. Mostly downhill and away from traffic, the leisurely route is paved and reserved for runners, walkers or cyclists. This makes it perfect for those with little experience, families, e-bikes and handcycles.

The Valsugana Cycle Path runs along the course of the Brenta river and partly follows the ancient Via Claudia Augusta, a Roman road dating to the first century AD that connected Bavaria and Emilia across the Alps. The actual length of the cycle path is about 70 kilometres (43 mi), between the communes of San Cristoforo al lago and Cismon del Grappa, but I recommend this extended 86-kilometre (54 mi) alternative.

Pergine is easily reached from Trento by road via Civezzano and the lakes of Madrano and Canzolino, or by rail, thanks to the Trento-Venice railway. The city of Bassano is also on this same route. Once you reach the town of the Alpini, you can take the train back to Pergine, or continue to any other town in the Veneto region.

Let yourself be carried away by the descent along the Brenta – the Valsugana Cycle Path is made for relaxed cycling where you can enjoy the company of the people around you. You can cycle this route year-round but I recommend avoiding the hottest and coldest months of the year, December and August. A touring bike and a willingness to pedal are the only things you’ll need.

Enjoy the adventure.
