The Poqueira Gorge and the three villages on its slopes have become one of the most iconic sights of the Alpujarra Mountains of Granada in Spain. Situated at the foot of the highest peaks of the Iberian Peninsula, it’s easy to see why these spectacular villages are so popular.

Three villages – Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira – make up the enclave. The area boasts exceptional natural beauty and serves as a living example of the Moorish heritage of these lands, which is well preserved here. Walking through the streets transports you to the past, to an era that was very different from today. You’ll find characteristic grey ‘terraos’ – typical flat roofs that adorn the white-washed Alpujarra houses – and ‘tinaos’ traditional architecture.

In this Collection, I present two of the most interesting routes to explore the Poqueira Gorge. Both begin and end in Capileira, which is the perfect base for your adventures. The village has several restaurants, bars, shops, supermarkets and accommodation options.
Getting to Capileira is easy. You can drive or catch an Alsa bus from Granada. For more information, visit: alsa.com/c/portal/update_language?p_l_id=21651890&redirect=%2F&languageId=en_US

These two routes through the Poqueira Gorge are suitable year-round. However, bear in mind that it’s quite cold in winter and that you may encounter snow. On the other hand, summer is very hot, so it’s best to avoid the middle of the day.

As they’re not too long or steep, you don’t need to be experienced in the mountains to take on these routes, just make sure you’re reasonably fit. You don’t need to bring any special equipment unless you hike in winter or snowy conditions. However, hiking poles are a good idea for the steeper parts. Carry enough water and some snacks for the trail.
