Crossing the Charente by MTB – forests to vineyards

With spectacular landscapes, vineyards and history, this crossing of the Charente MTB trail has a lot going for it. The route is an easy link between the Tour de la Charente MTB loop and the towns of La Rochefoucauld or Rouillac. It's up to you to decide which direction you ride. Combining it with the Tour de la Charente MTB loop creates a southern and northern loop, which you can split in two. With train connections from Angoulême, you can flexibly plan your bike trip.

The entire route measures 71 kilometres (44 mi), including 35 kilometres (22 mi) from La Rochefoucault to Angoulême and 36 kilometres (23 mi) from Angoulême to Rouillac. Each stage offers a different landscape, with dense green forests and shaded paths in the east and vineyards sprawled across the hillsides to the west of Angoulême.

This cross-country route tells the story of the area. The town of La Rochfoucauld’s history has been connected to the family that gave it its name for over 1,000 years. In Rouillac, you can immerse yourself in Roman life as the commune is home to some exceptional Gallo-Roman sites.

On a practical note, I'd recommend booking your accommodation in advance, especially in Rouillac, which has less on offer than in Angoulême and La Rochefoucault. These three towns have all the necessary shops and transport links.

To reach the Charente from Angoulême, several trains run to and from Paris, Lille, Bordeaux, Poitiers, Toulouse and Saintes. Intercity bus routes 180 and 181 connect Angoulême and La Rochefoucault. Route 162 runs between Rouillac and Angoulême. There are also bike hire companies in La Rochefoucauld and Angoulême.

I recommend this crossing from spring to autumn – the best time of year to explore the region. In the rainy season, some sections may become less passable due to mud. Bring along a repair kit as you won’t come across many bike repair shops, other than in the stage towns.

Whether you take on this adventure to discover the Charente or to join the Tour de la Charente by mountain bike, I wish you a pleasant journey.
