The GR 3 is the oldest long-distance hiking trail that crisscrosses France. This itinerary closely follows the course of the Loire, ‘Europe's last wild river’ and a UNESCO World Heritage site, which flows for 1,300 kilometres (800 mi). Starting at Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc, where the Loire rises, the GR 3 winds its way through diverse regions before plunging into the deep waters of the ocean. From the Massif Central to the Atlantic Ocean, via the majestic valley of the Châteaux de la Loire, this trail is mysterious and a delight for hikers of all ages.

In this final Collection between Le Puy-en-Velay and Mont Gerbier de Jonc, I invite you to retrace the last stretch of the GR 3. Your journey begins by departing the famous picturesque town of Le Puy-en-Velay. Don't forget to take part in the blessing ceremony held in the cathedral every morning at around seven o'clock; it’s popular among pilgrims.

Once you've left the hustle and bustle of the city, you'll soon find yourself back in the wide-open spaces long shaped by the volcanic activity that once ruled the region. The steep route offers spectacular views of the Loire Gorge. Treasures such as old mediaeval fortresses lie dormant, inviting you to take in the sights and sounds of history and culture.

At the end of this Collection, you'll reach the summit of one of France's most famous volcanoes: Mont Gerbier de Jonc. Known as the source of the Loire River, the Gerbier de Jonc's unique hydronymy allows its fauna to spread across every one of its slopes. In spring, after the harsh temperatures of winter, the volcano is covered in a blanket of luminous colours.

Trains run daily to Le Puy-en-Velay from Saint-Étienne or Clermont-Ferrand. To return from Mont Gerbier de Jonc, however, no public transport is available. I recommend hitchhiking back to Le Puy-en-Velay, before heading for Aubenas. From these two towns, you'll be able to reach the main roads more quickly.

Accommodation on this section of the GR 3 is limited so book in advance. At the end of the first and possibly last stage, I suggest wild camping. Remember to respect nature and residents and leave no trace.

With its easy trails, this section of the GR 3 is hikable year-round. In summer, the wind can mask the heat so don't forget to cover your head and hydrate regularly. As the route exceeds 1,000 metres (3,200 ft) in elevation, you may encounter snow in winter. Pack clothing for cold and wet weather.

Enjoy your trip!
